Martinez is situated on the south side of the Carquinez Strait shoreline providing panoramic views from the yacht club over the water to Benicia on the north side of the strait. The historic downtown is the County Seat for Contra Costa and is home to the old county court house. The Amtrak station is still operational and provides connections for travelers to the south and east to Sacramento and beyond. The city center park is on the water and provides plenty of room for family picnics, hiking, biking and the largest number of outdoor bocce ball courts in the county. Away from the strait, there is a slight grade upward until you reach the north side of Briones Park where homes on large lots with horses can be found in the hills. State Highway 4 through the area enables commuting both to the City and to Eastern Contra Costa County. The famous naturalist and photographer John Muir was from Martinez and today there is a National Memorial Park in his honor just along Highway 4.
